SUMMARY:What Can I Eat? (WCIE) Healthy Choices for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs)
DESCRIPTION:“What Can I Eat?” is a nutrition education program for adults. The goal of this program is to teach people how to eat in a way to keep their blood sugar healthy. The program is led by NATIVE HEALTH’s Amber Labahe and Gabrielle Begay. We will cover topics such as learning to eat healthy\, making balanced food choices to support nutrition and blood sugar management\, and engaging in hands-on activities with light physical movement. This series is open to anyone interested in learning how to eat healthier to prevent or manage diabetes. Participants will also participate in a hands-on learning activity and practice 10 minutes of mild physical activity in each class. \nThis program has four weekly sessions\, followed by a reunion on June 5th\, two months after the last class to provide continued support and celebrate ongoing successes in making healthy lifestyle choices. We’ll also learn hands-on ways to connect with these plants by making teas and salves together. \nSession 1\, Wednesday\, March 26: Plant Wisdom & Traditional Uses\nWe’ll explore various plants and their growth patterns\, traditional uses\, cultural stories\, and the lessons they teach us. *The first three registrants will receive a copy of “Plants Have So Much to Give Us\, All We Have to Do Is Ask” by Mary Siisip Geniusz. \nSession 2\, Thursday\, April 3: Wild Harvesting & Practical Applications\nLearn when\, how\, and why to harvest wild plants and herbs. We’ll also discuss traditional processing methods and ways to incorporate them into daily life. *The first ten registrants will receive a tea strainer and a bag of rosehip tea. \nSession 3\, Wednesday\, April 9: Herbal Preparations\nDiscover how to create herbal-infused vinegars\, honeys\, oils\, and salves. At NATIVE HEALTH\, we encourage you to join the conversation to #StopHIVTogether. NATIVE HEALTH staff are committed in doing our part to stop the spread of HIV in our communities. We can accomplish this by creating a community that promotes awareness\, understanding and acceptance. One way to Stop HIV Together is to #knowyourstatus. Knowing your status is key in protecting yourself and your partner(s). The CDC recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 be tested for HIV at least one.
