Student Internships

Undergraduate and graduate internships are accepted to various programs within NATIVE HEALTH in varying length internships. Under the supervision of a Program Manager or Division Director, students will gain additional skill sets.

NATIVE HEALTH–UnitedHealthcare Paid Internship

In support of NATIVE HEALTH’s vision to support Healthy People in Healthy Communities, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan has established a paid internship opportunity for American Indian/Alaska Native students who are interested in pursuing a career in public health and addressing social determinants of health.

This program offers a paid opportunity to work in public health and is designed to attract, recruit, hire, develop and retain American Indian/Alaska Native students for public health careers. Selected interns will earn a paid stipend internship for a total of 200 hours. 

The internship is open to Native American students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • American Indian/Alaska Native student enrolled in a Federally Recognized Tribe
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be accepted or enrolled full-time and seeding a degree in an accredited college or university
  • Have good academic standing (GPA of 2.5 or higher)
  • Complete a background check
  • Interested in pursuing a career in public health and addressing Social Determinants of Health

The Summer 2026 Internship Cycle is CLOSED. The deadline was April 17, 2026, at 5 pm (Phoenix time).

Internship Applicant Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Working on undergraduate or post-graduate degree
  • Current TB skin test within past year
  • Submission of current immunization records
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID (two weeks post second dose)
  • Background check or Fingerprint ID

  • Ability to pass pre-internship background check (if required)

Application Process

  • In order to apply for an internship you must check with your school to see if a current agreement is in place with NATIVE HEALTH

  • A limited number of internships will be accepted per semester. Very often internship positions are filled months in advance

Medical and dental clinical internships or externships are not accepted unless through pre-approved contractual sites, six months to one year in advance.
